For some, it represents another breakthrough comparable to the mobile-first transformation from a decade ago – or even a greater revolution in how user experiences are created. On the other hand, the concept of AI-first is often overused and risks becoming an empty slogan if it does not lead to a genuine shift in thinking.

In this article, you will learn what the AI-first approach looks like from the perspective of a UX designer.

Short story about AI-first

The expression “AI-first” usually appears in a broader context – as part of a holistic approach to building products, services, and shaping company growth strategies. Technology leaders began to communicate an AI-oriented strategy after 2010. That marked the beginning of what is now referred to as the AI boom. In 2011, Apple introduced Siri. Around 2013, Facebook started investing in AI labs. In 2014, Amazon launched Alexa (a fun fact: it was based on algorithms from the Polish company Ivona, which Amazon had acquired a year earlier).

The term “AI-first” first appeared almost a decade ago. In April 2016, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai announced (during Alphabet’s earnings conference) that:

In the long run, we are evolving from a mobile-first world to an AI-first world.

It was a signal of a shift (or rather an expansion) in how services were designed: moving from a focus on mobile devices to prioritizing the use of AI.

That same year, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff also used the term, describing the coming era as an “AI-first world.” Shortly after, Salesforce announced the launch of its AI-powered platform, Einstein.

AI present

Interest in AI skyrocketed after OpenAI released ChatGPT in November 2022.

Fig. 1 Rapid increase in Google searches for the term “AI” (source: Wikipedia)

The app gained one million users in just 5 days. The success of ChatGPT accelerated competitors’ work, and today the market features many LLMs that are still being improved.

In March this year, Amazon presented Alexa+ powered by generative AI (currently available only in the U.S.). OpenAI is working on a series of its own devices, which, according to announcements, are expected to revolutionize the way we think about interfaces, much like the launch of the iPhone once permanently changed the face of mobile phones. Will it happen? Time will tell.

Regardless, the AI solutions market reached a value of $279.22 billion in 2024, up from $136.55 billion in 2022 (according to Grand View Research). According to the “State of AI in design 2025” report, 89% of designers say that AI has improved their design process over the past year. We’ve gained many new tools and features that support both research (Jak AI może usprawnić badania UX?) and design work.

Are they perfect? Not at all. In fact, far from it. However, they are more than enough to create a quick sketch, diagram, flow, summarize research, and so on. We are still not at the stage of “I feed everything into AI and get a finished design”; UX designers and researchers still play (and will continue to play) a central role in the design process, but many tasks can now be accelerated, streamlined, or automated (e.g., AI in Figma).

New paradigm?

“AI-first” design refers to an approach in which artificial intelligence is treated as the foundation for a product or service from the very beginning, from the concept stage. It changes the way we think about user experience, making it more dynamic, personalized, and adaptive, therefore less predictable.

Jakob Nielsen even notes that AI introduces the first new interaction model in 60 years, referring to it as the third paradigm in the history of human-computer interaction. It’s the Intent-Based Outcome Specification, which replaces the current Command-Based Interaction Design model.

Fig. 3 User-interface paradigms of computing (source: Nielsen Norman Group)

The current interaction model is based on a sequence of commands issued by the user, which the computer executes to achieve the desired outcome. In the new approach described by Nielsen, the user tells the computer what they want to achieve, and AI decides which steps to take to reach that goal.

With this approach, the user experience will largely depend on the decisions made at the very beginning of the design process; for example, the data used to train the model will be crucial, as the outcome received by the user will depend on it. That is why UX experts need to be involved in AI-first product development from the earliest stages of development. They should have a say in which data is used, as their role is to identify how that data can meet users’ needs.

AI-first or AI-as-a-feature?

AI-first applications are built from the ground up around AI engines. Is this a common approach? Not yet. More often, we encounter existing applications that are usually quite complex, perform their functions well, and replacing them with something new would involve high costs and risks.

Therefore, UX designers are still more likely to work with AI-as-a-feature models than with AI-first ones. That said, to paraphrase a specific advertising slogan, the approach of “Everyone has AI, so I should too” doesn’t always make sense. New features should address real user problems or needs, which don’t always require AI. Suppose we decide to implement AI as a feature. In that case, it should provide genuine value to the user, either by solving a pain point or offering a new functionality that helps them achieve their goal more efficiently.

The AI-first approach compels designers to rethink their approach to human-system interaction, as it positions artificial intelligence at the center of product design. This involves developing new principles that focus on specific aspects of the user experience, regardless of the industry.

Characteristics of the AI-first approach

Some of the most important characteristics that can be highlighted include:

Adaptability – AI-first systems are capable of learning and adjusting to the user. Unlike traditional software, which remains static until the next update, an AI-based product should improve with each use, becoming more personalized and better suited to the user’s needs the longer it is used (this also implies iterative, non-linear user journeys).

User intent recognition – the application tries to “guess and predict” what the user wants to achieve while minimizing predictive errors (e.g., signaling uncertainty in its responses).

Personalization – tailoring the experience to individual needs. Modern users expect intelligent interactions, according to an Accenture study cited by IBM (2020), 83% of consumers are willing to share data in exchange for more personalized services.

Context awareness – the system considers the user’s situational context.

In the AI-first approach, designers focus more on creating intelligent systems that adapt to the user as interactions evolve, rather than on designing specific screens.

AI-first and mobile-first

The AI-first approach is often compared to the mobile-first philosophy, which transformed the way digital products are designed. However, this analogy has its limits.

Mobile-first design involved starting with the smallest screens, which forced the prioritization of content and features. This strategy taught the industry to focus on the context of use and the limitations of mobile devices (smaller display size, touch controls, slower connections, shorter user attention span while on the move, etc.). As a result, simpler interfaces were created, ultimately improving UX across all platforms.

AI-first represents a different kind of shift. The starting point is not screen size, but intelligent technology, which introduces a new interaction mechanism; its standards are still in the process of emerging.

Revolution or trendy term?

So, does the AI-first approach fundamentally change UX design, or is it just a marketing buzzword? The favorite answer among UX designers is “it depends.”

On the one hand, there is no shortage of arguments in favor of the “new paradigm.” Artificial intelligence introduces a qualitatively new element to human-computer interaction: the ability to engage in intent-driven dialogue, generate content, and make decisions autonomously through agents.

AI-first enthusiasts even predict the end of traditional applications in favor of seamless, intelligent assistants that handle our needs on demand. In their vision, instead of launching individual programs, users simply tell their AI agent what they want to achieve, and the agent takes care of it by communicating with various services.

This perspective would indeed represent a fundamental shift in the UX designer’s role. Design would focus more on defining experiences and rules for collaborating with AI, rather than traditional interface layouts. Designers would set the boundaries and principles within which AI shapes the user experience. If AI-first develops in this direction, we could honestly speak of a new design paradigm.

On the other hand, many products that loudly label themselves as “AI-powered” actually offer fairly superficial integrations, such as a chatbot in a banking app or recommendations in an online store. This is a form of AI-driven improvement, but it is not a revolution.

Summary

Whether AI-first will truly transform UX will likely become clear in the coming years as technology advances and new AI-based devices emerge.

However, the most probable scenario is a gradual integration of AI-first into existing practices. Traditional graphical interfaces will not disappear anytime soon, and UX will continue to focus on user needs. I believe AI will become another element in the UX designer’s toolkit.

Hybrid solutions are already being discussed, combining AI-driven elements with traditional UI components. For example, an application interface may still include menus and buttons (familiar, fast, and reliable), but also a chat field for more complex tasks. The user can choose what best suits their needs at any given moment. Many approaches will emerge, and standards will clarify over time, eventually becoming as natural as mobile-first or responsive design once was.

AI, by itself, does not possess the magical power to make a product better automatically. It cannot replace a lack of understanding of the user, fix a poorly designed interface, and, in fact, if these problems exist and one tries to patch them with AI, it can even make them worse.

I think Caleb Sponheim was right when asked what golden advice he would give to UX designers working on products that push AI usage:

Maybe not.

Perhaps there are other, better ways to meet users’ needs. Perhaps AI should not be used everywhere by default. If simpler solutions are available – use them. If AI truly adds value for the user, use AI. For a UX designer, the focus is always on the human, the end user.

For now, one thing is certain: the AI-first trend is one we cannot ignore. Even if it doesn’t revolutionize everything immediately, it already forces us (designers, researchers, PMs, etc.) to ask questions about the future of digital experiences. And asking these questions is valuable, regardless of whether we ultimately witness a revolution or just another technological hype.

            5/5 ( votes: 2)

The dynamic development of artificial intelligence is making the term “AI-first” increasingly common.
