They’re expensive time-wasters that make you feel busy while emptying your wallet and cluttering up your LinkedIn profile.

There. I said it.

But hang on before you come for me. They’re only garbage if you’re approaching them all wrong. When you actually know what you want and have a real plan? That’s when certifications can give you an incredible return on your investment.

Ever since I passed ISACA’s “Advanced in Auditing AI,” I’ve been getting hit with questions from other IT auditors, AI folks, and privacy professionals. Everyone wants to know if it’s worth it. And honestly, that got me thinking about this whole certification madness we’re all caught up in these days.

So let’s talk about:

what these things actually do for you,

how to figure out if one’s worth your time and money,

and why chasing every new certification might actually be holding you back.

The pandemic changed everything (and not in a good way)

Remember when COVID hit and suddenly everyone was stuck at home with nothing but time? That’s when things got weird with certifications. My LinkedIn feed turned into a non-stop parade of people showing off their latest course completion or announcing they’d started studying for yet another industry exam.

And yeah, I got sucked in too and signed up for way too many things. Went down these random learning paths that seemed important but… really weren’t.

The problem was I had no clue what I actually wanted out of any of it. I wasn’t thinking about my real goals or whether I’d even be able to use what I was learning.

That’s the trap right there. You end up with a resume that looks super impressive on paper but feels completely empty. Lots of certificates, zero actual growth.

What certifications really tell you about someone

Here’s the truth: if someone walks into my office waving their latest certification, that alone doesn’t convince me they can do the job.

What it does tell me is that they can sit down, focus, and get through an exam. And look, that’s actually valuable. It shows they can stick with something and follow through. As auditors, we get that, it’s about having a disciplined approach to getting things done.

But can they handle a crisis? Explain complex stuff to executives without putting them to sleep? Make smart decisions when there’s no textbook answer? The certificate doesn’t tell me any of that.

This is especially obvious in newer areas like AI governance. If you’re not already doing the work, dealing with AI risk assessments, testing controls, and sitting in model reviews, then no certificate is going to make you credible overnight magically. Sometimes it actually backfires because you’re chasing something shiny instead of building on what you’re already good at.

The six-month test that changed my approach

Here’s what I learned after wasting too much time and money: if you can’t put what you’re learning to use within six months, don’t bother yet.

During lockdown, I collected certificates in areas where I had no chance to actually practice anything. Guess what happened to all that knowledge? It disappeared – complete waste.

Now I think differently. I look at what I’m already solid at – controls, risk assessments, governance stuff – and figure out how to connect that to where things are heading. How do my current skills fit into AI audits? Cloud security? New privacy rules? That overlap between what you’re good at and where you want to go? That’s where the real opportunities are.

Three questions that’ll save you time and money

Before you sign up for another certification, ask yourself these three questions. And be honest with your answers.

1. Will this actually improve my chances of getting the jobs or clients I want?

Not in theory. Not because it “looks good.” I mean real, measurable impact. Will this open doors that are currently closed?

If you’re going after AI audit roles and they fill a specific gap employers keep mentioning, then yeah, go for it. But if you’re just trying to keep up with everyone else, maybe take a step back.

2. Does this fill a real gap in my background?

Like if you’re an IT auditor who wants to move into AI governance, but you’ve got no data science background. The right certification could show you’re serious about making that jump.

But if your experience already speaks for itself, maybe you don’t need another acronym after your name. Maybe you need better stories about your work or some portfolio projects instead.

3. Can I actually use this stuff within six months?

If not, you’ll forget it and feel frustrated. And you’ll have thrown away your return on investment.

Simple test: do you have a project, team, or client where you can apply this soon? If not, wait. Go shadow someone first. Join a working group. Get some real experience, then get certified.

Stop playing other people’s games

Certifications aren’t scams – they’re tools. But like any tool, they only work if you know when and how to use them.

Don’t get caught up in the pressure to constantly “stay current.” You’re not falling behind, you’re just on your own path. Your growth isn’t measured by how many badges you collect, but by how well you understand what you bring to the table and how smart you are about building on it.

Next time you see someone celebrating their latest certification, don’t automatically think “I should get that too.”

Instead, ask yourself:

Is this the right tool for where I am right now?

Does this solve an actual problem I’m facing?

Will this help me grow in a direction I actually care about?

When you can answer those clearly, certifications stop being expensive distractions and start being smart investments that actually pay off.

AI Governance, Audit & Security Certifications

Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP) – IAPP
Focuses on ethical, trustworthy AI governance, covering regulatory compliance, oversight, and responsible AI practices.
Target profile: Privacy professionals, compliance officers, risk managers, and AI governance leads.
More: AIGP: Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional

Advanced in AI Audit (AAIA) – ISACA
Validates skills in auditing AI systems, assessing algorithmic risks, and evaluating AI controls within enterprise risk frameworks.
Target profile: IT auditors, internal auditors, risk professionals, and AI assurance consultants..
More: ISACA Advanced in AI Audit

AI and Algorithm Auditor Certification – Babl.ai
Equips professionals to conduct AI risk and impact assessments aligned with the EU AI Act, ISO 42001, and NIST AI RMF standards.
Target profile: AI auditors, GRC specialists, AI compliance consultants.
More: The Algorithmic Bias Lab

Advanced in AI Security Management (AAISM™) – ISACA
Covers governance, controls, and risk management for securing enterprise AI systems.
Target profile: Security managers, CISOs, IT governance professionals, AI operations leads.
More: ISACA Advanced in AI Security Management

Certified AI Security Professional – Practical DevSecOps
Advanced, task-based certification with real-world labs focusing on LLM vulnerabilities, supply-chain risks, prompt injection, and MITRE ATLAS attack scenarios.
Target profile: Senior security engineers, red teamers, and AI security consultants.
More: Practical DevSecOps Training and Certifications

Summary

Certifications are only worth it if you have a clear plan.
