What does the transition from SAP PI to SAP PO mean for your company?

The former is a method of integration well known on the market while the latter is an automated configuration with advanced tools. What is the transition from SAP PI to SAP PO about?
The configuration layer in the SAP system has changed completely. All versions up to 7.4 release could use the ABAP layer (in version 7.4 also JAVA, so it was a two-stack system). On the other hand, version 7.5 is based only on the Java stack and the entire functionality has been written in this language. The new version also includes tools written in an understandable way, such as new adapters, routing, ccBPM, Proxy and Data provisioning.
What does this mean for business?
After the changes, all business scenarios written on the ABAP stack must be completely rewritten on the JAVA stack.
– We are not talking about copying a part of the configuration, but about a complete rewrite of the interface from scratch. However, this should come as no surprise to SAP users, because from version 7.4 it was recommended to use the JAVA stack. So this release could be considered as a temporary release that gave users time to gain knowledge. And now, since all previous versions are no longer supported, it is worth considering moving to the latest 7.5 version – says Marek Bor, Senior SAP Developer at Sii Poland.
By when do I have to update my SAP version?
SAP initially offered support for older versions until 2020, then extended it for two stack systems (7.3 EHP1, 7.4) until 2030:
- SAP NetWeaver 7.40 (AS ABAP only): Mainstream maintenance will be offered until December 2027, extended maintenance until 2030.
- SAP NetWeaver 7.31 (AS ABAP only): Mainstream maintenance will be offered until December 2027, extended maintenance until 2030.
