For years, Sii has been supporting companies in creating modern, secure, and user-friendly mobile applications. With experience from hundreds of projects, Sii Poland’s team of experts has gained unique competencies that will be showcased at the event.

Main themes: Security and Digital Accessibility

This year’s presentations focus on two key issues – digital accessibility and mobile application security. Why does it matter? In June 2025, the European Accessibility Act (EAA) will come into effect, requiring companies to adapt their products and services to the needs of people with disabilities. This significant change requires early preparation. Meanwhile, mobile application security remains a pressing issue, especially in fintech. A false sense of security can lead to serious threats in the digital world.

Where to find Sii Poland experts?

Join us on March 27-28 in Kraków at Mobile Trends for the following presentations:

March 27, 2025, 11:40 AM, UX/UI Stage

Weronika Sobótka-Wierzchowska – Accessibility? What are the biggest challenges you face?

Maciej Najbar, Senior Architect at Sii: I’ll mention key difficulties. The first is sacrificing quality for quick product delivery. With each new functionality, the application becomes more complex, and if a security hole appears, fixing it can take a long time. Another challenge is the misconception that HTTPS alone ensures security—it’s just one part of the chain. I will elaborate on this topic at Mobile Trends – the example with the safe and the administrator code illustrates this perfectly. The last problem is the lack of automated tests – without them, we cannot be sure that changes that fix one thing will not break another.

How can we ensure mobile application security?

M.N.: It’s worth considering what can go wrong. We cannot fully secure the system because not everything depends on us. The application user is also an essential part of this equation. Programming involves delivering data that is returned in a processed form. This process is called a function. From this perspective, we should ask ourselves about the data we input into the function. Are they public or private, and what happens to them afterward?

Can you share an example of a security flaw that seemed trivial but turned out to be a critical threat?

M.N.: A specific example of the situation you are asking about will appear during my presentation. Generally speaking, securing data with weak encryption is worse than unsecured data. It’s like wanting to give someone a PIN code. We can convey it in Chinese, which is a substantial security measure. The probability that someone in Poland understands Chinese is small. However, we decided to whisper it in Polish, choosing weak security. It takes more focus to intercept such a transmitted PIN. The second example gives us a false sense of security, so we don’t consider improving it. Unlike saying the PIN out loud when we realize it is dangerous and requires finding a better way to convey this vital information.

How often do you encounter situations where companies are convinced of the certainty of their security systems and are vulnerable to attacks?

M.N.: The illusion is that we believe in complete security, and nothing can guarantee it. Every company is vulnerable to an attack. Some may be attacked at the beginning of their existence. They will remain unaware of this for a long time, and the consequences will be felt only when they grow to a size that interests criminals enough to try to extort ransom.

Do you have any advice for companies to protect themselves from such situations?

M.N.: The organization’s reputation is at stake. Banking applications are usually well-secured, and the weakest link often is the client. Criminals know this, so they prefer to organize phishing or spear-phishing campaigns instead of attacking the system. One bank, which understands such methods well, conducted an educational campaign in television commercials. It benefited everyone, and the reputation of this bank significantly increased.

Digital Accessibility – Interview with Weronika Sobótka-Wierzchowska

While cybersecurity focuses on protecting data and transactions, digital accessibility ensures equal access to applications for all users. How should companies prepare for legal changes and effectively implement WCAG standards? Weronika Sobótka-Wierzchowska, Accessibility Expert at Sii Poland, will talk about this topic.

Weronika, please tell us what you do daily and what aspects of UX/UI design are fundamental to you.

Weronika Sobótka-Wierzchowska, Accessibility Expert at Sii: Every day, I help teams integrate digital accessibility at every stage of product development. For me, accessibility, in the broadest sense, is the most important aspect. If I had to choose the most crucial stage, it would be empathy. I want everyone in the project to understand that our recipients are people with real problems. It’s not about “ticking off” compliance with the standard but about diligent work and its impact on improving a piece of the world where disability temporarily ceases to matter.

Accessibility is often overlooked, underestimated, or treated as a formality to be checked off. In my work, I also empathize with people responsible for specific tasks in this area. I know they have many concerns and doubts, so it is very important to work on empathizing with these people and towards them. It pays off and facilitates further work on technicalities.

At Mobile Trends, you will discuss the European Accessibility Act (EAA), which will soon become mandatory for many companies. Which industries will feel this impact the most, and what changes do they need to implement?

W.S.-W.: The regulations resulting from the European Accessibility Act will come into effect on June 28 this year. They will affect key industries such as banking, transportation, information and communication technology, and e-commerce. Simply put, companies must ensure the accessibility of products and services, train employees, and monitor compliance with the EAA. I will talk more about the EAA during my presentation, to which I warmly invite you.

If companies have not prioritized digital accessibility before, how should they approach it now?

W.S.-W.: As quickly as possible 😉 It’s hard to give a universal recipe, as much depends on the specifics of the company, its needs, and plans. It’s worth starting with an audit to identify key problems and plan the next steps. Real benefits come from ongoing cooperation with a specialist who can help navigate the maze of regulations, indicate directions, and support action planning.

Another effective solution is training for teams, where we raise awareness and work on specific technical aspects affecting accessibility. This way, teams can independently implement these principles.

What are the biggest challenges companies face when implementing WCAG standards? How can they be addressed?

W.S.-W.: Besides the typical deficiency of time and resources, teams lack specialists who would take care of the entire process. Knowledge about accessibility is often fragmented and unstructured. The information chaos around the law makes it difficult to obtain clear guidelines.

Some companies offer ineffective solutions, such as overlays on websites that do not meet standards. I believe that having a person responsible for accessibility issues, similar to accessibility coordinators in public institutions, or ongoing cooperation with external specialists can greatly support the organization.

What practical tools and processes can help development teams effectively implement accessibility principles?

W.S.-W.: I am a fan of a holistic approach, emphasizing accessibility issues from the beginning and consistently implementing them throughout the process. Ideally, time and resources for accessibility should be included at the concept stage while writing the project’s schedule and budget. At the design stage, it is crucial to consider color schemes, contrast, and cooperation with assistive technologies. Modifications at this stage can significantly simplify further processes. This is the right time to take care of the annotated design, i.e., project documentation with accessibility guidelines. Thanks to it, the developer knows what to include and how to maintain solution consistency. Development teams should know how to work so that the project meets the accessibility criteria. It is beneficial when teams can consult and preliminarily test their ideas or solutions with an accessibility specialist. In the next stage, i.e., during testing, several issues arise. Some tests can be conducted automatically using tools like WAVE or axe DevTools. However, their results will only allow for partial, quick verification of a few issues that must be checked manually. Manual tests, e.g., with screen readers, help verify compliance with WCAG. A detailed description of errors is a key guideline for the developer, who needs to know what to fix.

Mobile Trends Conference – an area for discussion and knowledge sharing

Mobile Trends 2025 is an excellent opportunity to explore key challenges and best practices in modern mobile application development.
