However, there is much more behind this short description.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A programming language is a way of communicating with a computer. Code written by a developer needs to be translated into instructions that a machine can understand &#8211; zeros and ones. C++ programming can be compared to writing a recipe. A good recipe needs to be structured, precise, and unambiguous so that the person using it knows exactly what to do. Code works in a similar way &#8211; its structure is defined by the syntax of the language, which allows people to read and understand it before it is executed by a computer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, knowing the C++ language alone is not enough. It is simply a tool. Software development involves an entire ecosystem of technologies, libraries, tools, and processes that make it possible to build, develop, test, and maintain applications over many years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What made you decide to specialize in C++?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the first programming language I learned, and although I later worked with Java, C#, Python, Basic, and Delphi, C++ was the language that suited me best.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book \u201cSymfonia C++\u201d by Jerzy Gr\u0119bosz had a major influence on me. I started learning from it even before university. It reads like a good novel rather than a programming textbook. If the author ever comes across this interview, I would like to thank him, because it was thanks to this book that programming became my passion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To this day, I am fascinated by the world of logic and the possibilities offered by C++. Discovering new solutions reminds me of exploring unfamiliar mountain trails. There is always something new waiting to be found.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does a typical day in the life of a C++ Developer at Sii look like?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My day usually starts with a bike ride to the office. This is when I process the events of the previous day, and ideas for solving problems I could not deal with earlier often come to me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once I arrive at the office, I start by checking my email. In projects delivered for international clients, messages can arrive at any time, so the day\u2019s plan often needs to be adjusted to new priorities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If things are calm, I move on to the tasks planned for the current sprint. What a C++ Developer works on depends on the stage and nature of the project. In development projects, I spend most of my time programming in C++ and developing new functionalities. In maintenance projects, I focus more often on analyzing bugs, identifying their root causes, and preparing fixes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Code Review is also an integral part of my work. Simply checking what another C++ Developer has changed is not enough &#8211; you also need to understand how those changes affect the entire system. It is one of the most important elements of the software development process, helping maintain high code quality and improve application security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another important stage is verifying that the changes work as expected. If there are testers involved in the project, I really value working with them because they often identify scenarios that developers have not anticipated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also really enjoy Pair Programming. Analyzing a problem together with another person can often lead to a solution much faster. Interestingly, that person does not always have to be a more experienced developer &#8211; a fresh perspective can be equally valuable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, however, the work of a C++ Developer is not limited to writing code. Increasingly, developers are also expected to understand DevOps, build process automation, scripting, and the maintenance of infrastructure used in the project.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In which industries and projects does C++ play a key role?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From my perspective, C++ continues to play a key role in several areas where performance and reliability are particularly important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These include server applications and solutions requiring intensive computation. Embedded systems also remain a very important area, where C++ is increasingly used alongside C.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also a technology widely used in the gaming industry and in many libraries used by other programming languages. Python is a good example. Many people appreciate how easy it is to work with Python, but it is less commonly discussed that many of its highest-performance libraries are also written in C++. One example is TensorFlow, which is used for working with neural networks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my day-to-day work, I use C++ programming to develop desktop applications with the Qt framework, so this is the area in which I have the most experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The specifics of the role<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What problems do you most often solve as a C++ Developer?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It depends on the project. The nature of my work has changed over the years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, I focus mainly on designing, implementing, and optimizing algorithms that process geometric data using multithreaded programming. Most often, I solve problems related to managing data access, ensuring the correctness of calculations, and improving application performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, data processing itself is only one part of a C++ Developer\u2019s work. Issues related to software architecture, scalability, code maintainability, and user experience (UX\/UI) are equally important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also work with scripts and configuration files on a daily basis, as they are an essential part of the modern software development process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In which types of projects does C++ have an advantage over other programming languages?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the IT world, it is difficult to talk about one language being the best for every use case. Every technology has its strengths and weaknesses, and the choice depends on the project requirements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The greatest advantage of C++ is the ability to build highly efficient applications while using modern programming paradigms: procedural, object-oriented, and functional programming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my opinion, C++ works best wherever performance and full control over application behavior are essential. This includes computational libraries used by other languages such as Python, Big Data applications, systems that require intensive data processing, desktop applications, and solutions based on multithreaded programming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More and more projects today are hybrid in nature and combine several technologies. As a result, C++ often serves as the foundation responsible for the most computationally demanding components of a system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does the software development process look like in projects using C++?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The basic stages, such as analysis, design, and testing, are similar to those in other technologies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The specifics of C++ projects become particularly apparent during compilation and the application build process. Every source file needs to be compiled and then linked with the other elements of the project to create the final program or library.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Embedded systems, you additionally need to ensure that the code is placed correctly in the device\u2019s memory. In practice, tools that automate the entire build process are extremely important. One of the most commonly used solutions today is CMake, which makes it possible to manage project configuration and the compilation process across different platforms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which technologies and tools does a C++ Developer most commonly work with?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In my case, the technology stack includes, among others: Qt, QML, Python, Bash, Git, CMake, Jenkins, GoogleTest, GoogleBenchmark, clang-format, clang-tidy, as well as tools for debugging, profiling, and static code analysis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the project, this may also include tools related to CI\/CD, compiling applications for Android, or working with Embedded devices. Today\u2019s C++ Developer environment is an entire ecosystem of technologies supporting software development, testing, and maintenance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How important are performance and optimization in your daily work?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Performance is one of the most important aspects of C++ programming, particularly in projects that process large amounts of data. At the same time, it is worth remembering that premature optimization can do more harm than good.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one Big Data project, we managed to reduce calculation time from 72 to 16 hours by analyzing the architecture, code quality, and algorithms being used. This shows just how significant properly designed optimization can be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which technical challenges do you enjoy solving the most?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Computational algorithms, performance optimization, and multithreaded programming give me the greatest satisfaction. I particularly enjoy working with calculations in 2D and 3D space because the results can be easily verified. In these types of tasks, facts matter \u2013 the result is either correct, or it is not, and the execution time either meets the requirements or requires further optimization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is collaboration with testers, architects, and other developers like?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned earlier, I really value working with testers. This leads to more reliable software. Working with architects requires being able to provide solid justification for proposed changes. I especially value people who look not only at an individual component, but at the entire system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to other developers, openness to discussion and the ability to provide constructive feedback are key. I work best in interdisciplinary teams where everyone contributes different skills and we work together to create the best possible solution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Product Owners, managers, and stakeholders also have a major impact on the quality of collaboration. The way work is organized and communication is handled often determines whether even a very strong team will be able to reach its full potential.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How has the work of a C++ Developer changed over the past few years?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, the work of a C++ Developer focused mainly on writing code. Today, a much broader range of skills is expected. In addition to very good knowledge of C++, developers increasingly need expertise in DevOps, tools such as Qt, integration with Python, GPU programming, and process automation. AI-based solutions have also been added to the list of relevant skills. The scale of projects has changed as well, along with the amount of data being processed and the importance of cybersecurity, which is now an integral part of the software development process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Career development and career path<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What did your path to becoming a C++ Developer look like?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In my case, there were no surprises. Even as an intern, I was already performing the responsibilities of a C++ Developer and gaining my first experience as a Software Developer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was expected to have a good knowledge of C++, understand documentation, and effectively complete the tasks assigned to me. As I mentioned earlier, I had already learned C++ before starting university.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which skills should a Junior C++ Developer develop to gain experience quickly?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no shortcuts. Experience is the number of problems you have solved. The more problems you solve, the faster you develop.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I gained experience not only through my own projects but also by helping my fellow students. Once you start working professionally, Pair Programming is an excellent way to develop your skills, particularly when you are the person helping others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can AI shorten this path? In my opinion, no. It can suggest a solution, but it cannot replace the process of finding the answer independently. Solving problems is precisely what builds experience. If I were to use AI while learning, I would probably use it for Code Review \u2013 although I would take it with a pinch of salt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to C++ skills, it\u2019s worth learning how to structure and organize a project. Early in my career, I relied too heavily on the capabilities of my IDE and became interested too late in how project build tools, version control systems, or CMake actually work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the most important skill remains the ability to \u201cconnect the dots\u201d. You can have an excellent knowledge of tools and write correct code, but without the ability to analyze problems and draw conclusions, it is difficult to develop as an engineer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What distinguishes a Senior C++ Developer from someone at mid-level?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The shortest answer is engineering maturity &#8211; a broader understanding of software engineering and the consequences of the decisions being made.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Mid-level Developer has a very good knowledge of C++, tools, and the development environment. A Senior goes one step further. They can anticipate the consequences of their decisions, propose several solutions to the same problem, and consciously choose the best one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ability to share knowledge and justify decisions is equally important. Technical expertise matters, but in everyday work, collaboration with the team turns out to be just as important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is C++ a good technology for people starting their careers in IT?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>C++ is a demanding language, but its complexity makes it possible to develop a good understanding of many mechanisms that are also used in other technologies. The knowledge gained while programming in C++ makes learning additional languages much easier later on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also worth considering the situation on the job market, available employment opportunities, and above all whether the projects delivered using a given technology are interesting to you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, I do not believe there is one best programming language for beginners. What matters more is whether you are interested in the projects you can build with it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love developing graphical applications, which is why C++ turned out to be the perfect choice for me. For someone who does not want to develop Embedded systems, console applications, or desktop applications, another technology may be a better option.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important thing is to enjoy learning because that makes it easier to stay motivated when overcoming new challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which books, courses, or projects would you recommend to beginner developers?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I have valued Jerzy Gr\u0119bosz\u2019s work for many years, so I recommend his <em>Opus Magnum<\/em>. I have also learned a lot from technical documentation, conference talks, and books by authors such as Scott Meyers, Sean Parent, Andrei Alexandrescu, Herb Sutter, and Robert C. Martin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Technologies, software, and the future of C++<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>There are many opinions that C++ is an \u201cold language.\u201d Do you agree with that statement?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is difficult to argue with it. C++ was created many years ago and continues to maintain very good backward compatibility &#8211; code written several decades ago can often still be compiled and run without any problems. At the same time, C++ is continuously evolving. New standards introduce new functionalities and improvements, so I would not predict that it will disappear from the market anytime soon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which modern features introduced in newer C++ standards have made developers\u2019 work easier?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the solutions introduced in successive C++ standards have been available in other programming languages for a long time, so it is difficult to identify one truly revolutionary change. Modules, however, have significant potential and are ultimately intended to simplify the process of building projects. Now, their implementation is only partially compliant with the standard, and their full adoption still requires broader tool support. Smart pointers were also a major breakthrough, making memory management significantly easier. C++20, in turn, introduced concepts, which simplify the use of advanced template programming mechanisms such as SFINAE.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is artificial intelligence already influencing the work of C++ Developers?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Definitely. AI is present in practically every area of IT; however, my experience with it has not been very satisfactory. I see benefits in applications such as searching for information, brainstorming, or supporting Code Review. I am much more cautious when it comes to code generation. Particularly with complex algorithms, the results still often require careful verification and many corrections. I enjoy solving problems and writing code myself. This is the part of my work that gives me the greatest satisfaction. If AI generates the solution, what remains for me is mainly analyzing and correcting it, which is no longer as interesting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which trends will have the greatest impact on the development of C++ technology in the coming years?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t have enough data to predict the direction of the market, but I expect future C++ standards to continue developing both the language and the standard library, although the changes will gradually become less revolutionary. I am also following Herb Sutter\u2019s work on a new syntax for C++ with great interest. It is being developed while maintaining compatibility with the existing language. This is an interesting direction that could simplify the use of many C++ mechanisms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, there is an enormous number of systems that have been developed for many years or even decades. Rewriting them in a new language would be extremely expensive, which is why I believe C++ will remain one of the most important technologies used in demanding projects for a long time. It will remain a solid choice for a long time, and when combined with other languages or technologies, it can enable even more impressive solutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Working as a C++ Developer at Sii<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What makes working as a C++ Developer at Sii stand out?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most C++ projects at Sii are delivered to our clients. For me, one major benefit is the opportunity to exchange experiences with C++ engineers and other IT specialists working on projects for different clients. Of course, while respecting confidentiality, we mainly discuss the use of specific C++ language features and the results they produce &#8211; both positive and negative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have personally changed projects within Sii many times, so over the past 12 years I have been able to gain experience in many different areas. This has definitely had a positive impact on my development as a C++ Developer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What types of projects do C++ teams at Sii deliver?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To the best of my knowledge, the scope is very broad. Within the Embedded area alone, we work on C++ projects for industries such as medical, industrial, automotive, and telecommunications. In addition, we have open projects covering areas such as Big Data and desktop applications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do developers have an influence on the choice of technologies and the direction of project development?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot depends on the stage of the project. Projects that start from a proverbial \u201cblank sheet of paper\u201d offer the greatest opportunities to choose technologies. In mature projects, the programming language is usually already defined, but there are still decisions to be made regarding, for example, the selection of new libraries or specific technical solutions. The C++ Developer\u2019s influence on the direction of development also depends on how the work is organized. In my current project, I am one of the most experienced developers, so my analysis and proposed solutions are often implemented. I have the freedom to choose algorithms as long as they meet the requirements, and I also have an influence on the graphical layer of the application, particularly the layout and functionality of individual elements. However, I have also worked on projects where tasks left much less room for a creative approach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does knowledge sharing between C++ specialists look like?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As with other technologies, minimal examples work very well, as they make it possible to confirm or disprove a specific hypothesis, particularly when there is a discussion about how a program will behave. When designing software architecture or analyzing sequences of events, a whiteboard and diagrams are extremely useful. I also enjoy using live coding. I make changes to the code in front of participants and show them the results, allowing everyone to draw their own conclusions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do you value most in your daily collaboration with the team?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pair debugging. When we work on one problem for too long, it becomes easy to stop noticing solutions that would previously have seemed obvious. Analyzing the problem together with another person provides a fresh perspective and an opportunity to discuss ideas. More than once, this has helped us find a solution much faster.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>C++ Developer salaries and motivation<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do C++ Developer salaries depend on?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While working in large companies, I have noticed that skills alone do not always determine compensation. Negotiation skills and the ability to present your value can also play a role. This probably applies not only to C++ Developers but to most roles in IT.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do responsibility and specialization have a greater impact on salary than years of experience alone?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I do not have data that would allow me to clearly confirm such a relationship. However, based on my observations of C++ job offers, the more specialized the requirements and the rarer the skills, the higher the salary offered may be. I would nevertheless be cautious when comparing salary ranges published by different sources. They do not always show the full picture of the market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do you view career development opportunities compared with financial motivation?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Career development opportunities for C++ Developers vary greatly and depend largely on the project. Even an interesting project may involve a scope of responsibilities focused mainly on maintaining an existing solution. Compensation is obviously important, but for me it is not always enough to motivate a change. In the past I have turned down such opportunities because of the way a project was managed or the technologies being used. What I work on and how I work also matters a great deal to me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tips for Junior C++ Developers<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a career as a Junior C++ Developer?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is worth creating your own small projects that can serve as a testing ground for learning C++ programming. There simply are none. Developing software in C++ requires an understanding of both what is visible at first glance and the mechanisms operating underneath. I disagree with the idea that implementation details should not concern a developer. Understanding these details is precisely what allows you to better understand the code, solve problems consciously, and gradually develop senior-level expertise. Once, during a technical interview I led, I even encountered a candidate who said that we were looking for a coder rather than a developer because we were interested in his ability to write code with a proper understanding of what they were doing.
