New digital sales channel for local businesses
A new monetization model for regional media
For years, Berlingske Media has supported local businesses through its network of newspapers, online portals, and radio stations. As retail rapidly shifted online and revenues from traditional advertising declined, the group began looking for new business models built on its strong regional reach.
For many local stores in western Denmark, the lack of an online sales channel meant a real risk of losing customers. Berlingske Media identified an opportunity to address this challenge by launching a marketplace that would allow small businesses to enter ecommerce quickly – without investing in their own technology infrastructure.
Time was critical: the platform had to go live before the peak shopping season while providing intuitive merchant management, security, and room for further growth. Berlingske Media selected Sii Poland as a technology partner with proven experience in fast, scalable e-commerce implementations.
The client was looking for a modern solution with an intuitive admin interface, mobile‑friendly configuration, built‑in upselling and cross‑selling features, easy integration with third‑party systems, and advanced security mechanisms. We delivered exactly that, combining strong frontend expertise with a full‑spectrum, cross‑functional team – Bartłomiej Kiermasz, Sii Poland.
Full Magento delivery from analysis to production
Sii Poland was responsible for the entire marketplace delivery – from requirements analysis and UX/UI design through development, testing, and production launch.
The scope included:
- Designing a modern Magento-based e-commerce platform optimized for all devices
- Building an intuitive admin panel for merchants
- Implementing upsell and cross-sell mechanisms to support higher basket value
- Integrating external systems, including payments, ERP, and logistics
- Deploying security and access control mechanisms
The project was delivered using an Agile (Scrum) approach, with two‑week iterations. This allowed Berlingske Media to continuously test new functionalities and make business decisions during development – without delays or project restarts.
The first store launched on schedule, just ahead of the seasonal sales peak. Following its success, the client expanded the initiative with a second platform, also delivered by Sii.
The flexibility of the Sii team is exceptional. In today’s media landscape, the ability to adapt quickly is critical to success. Sii’s experienced specialists – many of whom have worked on this project for years – bring outstanding domain knowledge and stability. Thanks to low team turnover, we benefit from continuity and consistently high delivery standards – Pernille Louise Jansen, CIO, Berlingske Media.
A new growth channel for regional media and local businesses
The new marketplace enabled Berlingske Media to monetize its relationships with local entrepreneurs through commissions, promotions, and advertising services, while strengthening its position as a leader in the digital transformation of regional media.
For small and mediumsized businesses, the platform provided a fast, simple, and secure entry into ecommerce – without the need to build or maintain their own technology stack. The project increased online visibility for local products, stimulated regional trade, and laid a solid foundation for the further development of Berlingske Media’s digital services.
