Constructing a new power plant requires more than ensuring operational efficiency. It also demands the protection of industrial control systems responsible for the continuity and reliability of plant operations. In energy infrastructure, the OT environment is a critical component directly affecting operational resilience and system availability.
The client, a global energy company, needed to design an OT cybersecurity architecture before commissioning the facility. This approach would reduce the need for costly modifications later in the project lifecycle and ensure compliance with critical infrastructure security requirements.
The key objective was to establish a consistent protection model aligned with the international IEC 62443 standard and adapted to the specific requirements of an industrial environment. Achieving this required a combination of risk assessment, industry-standard expertise, and practical experience in securing OT systems.
Risk-based OT security architecture aligned with IEC 62443
Sii Poland began the project with a comprehensive OT risk assessment. The analysis identified potential threats, vulnerabilities, and areas requiring additional protection before the power plant entered operation.
Based on the findings, Sii designed an OT cybersecurity architecture aligned with IEC 62443, addressing both technical requirements and the unique demands of critical infrastructure, where security must support operational continuity.
The project included the implementation of key security controls such as:
- Endpoint protection solutions
- IDS/IPS systems for threat detection and prevention
- Log collection and backup solutions
- Network firewalls
- Identity and access management (IAM) systems
In addition, Sii carried out OT system hardening activities, including:
- Secure environment configuration
- Removal of unnecessary services
- Strengthening security settings and policies
As a result, the OT environment was prepared for secure operations before the power plant was commissioned.
Secure operations from day one
Designing and implementing the OT cybersecurity architecture during the construction phase enabled the client to better manage risks affecting the continuity of power plant operations. Early identification of vulnerabilities and implementation of security controls reduced the need for remediation after commissioning.
The organization gained an OT environment prepared for secure operation in accordance with critical infrastructure requirements, improving operational resilience and readiness to respond to cyber threats from the first day of operation.
