Reusable embedded software platform for on-board mission and payload computing in unmanned systems

Standardizing the embedded software stack for faster unmanned system development

The client needed to replace multiple device-specific software implementations with a common, reusable embedded software baseline that could be adapted across different target hardware configurations and future product variants.

The new platform had to shorten board bring-up and HW/SW integration, reduce repeated engineering effort, and provide a consistent foundation for integrating new device interfaces, communication modules, sensors, and mission-specific equipment (payloads).

At the same time, the software stack had to remain lightweight and hardware-tailored, including only the components required for the target use case. It also needed to support on-board image processing and edge computing workloads, while meeting defined requirements for software integrity, secure data handling, and platform cybersecurity.

The objective was to establish a controlled software foundation that would simplify future product development, integration, and maintenance while reducing technical divergence between devices.

Reusable on-board software platform for unmanned systems

Over approximately 7 months, a Sii Poland team developed a reusable and secure on-board software platform tailored to the target System-on-Module.

The scope of work included:

  • Opracowanie bazowej wersji oprogramowania wbudowanego, ściśle dopasowanej do specyfiki sprzętowej docelowego modułu System-on-Module
  • Development of a hardware-tailored embedded software baseline for the target System-on-Module
  • Preparation of lightweight system configurations supporting board bring-up, early hardware validation, and HW/SW integration
  • Delivery of production-ready operating environments supporting remote diagnostics, software deployment, device management, and integration with external systems
  • Enablement of communication, data acquisition, and hardware control capabilities required for integration with sensors, peripherals, and mission payloads
  • Integration of camera-based image and video processing capabilities, including machine vision and on-board edge processing
  • Delivery of a modern development environment supporting portability, maintainability, and efficient application development across future platform variants
  • Implementation of a controlled software lifecycle covering version management, repeatable releases, and secure software updates
  • Introduction of platform security mechanisms including trusted startup, software integrity verification, protected credential handling, and secure data storage
  • Establishment of a vulnerability management and remediation process supporting platform hardening throughout the product lifecycle
  • Preparation of build, validation, documentation, and maintenance assets enabling repeatable software baselines, knowledge transfer, and long-term platform support

Faster unmanned system development with greater control over the software baseline

The reusable software foundation reduces the need to develop and maintain separate software environments for individual devices. A common baseline also gives the client a more consistent starting point for future platform variants and extensions.

Standardized build, security, update, and release processes support long-term maintainability while reducing technical divergence and configuration differences between products.

The engagement concluded with knowledge-transfer sessions and technical workshops, giving the client the source code, documentation, and engineering knowledge required for independent in-house development, platform evolution, and long-term maintenance.
