The client was carrying out active safety and autonomous steering projects across multiple vehicle platforms. The scope included mechanically integrated components such as road sign recognition cameras, on-board computers for sensor processing and autonomous steering, under-hood components, steering column-related components, external sensors, motion sensors, and cameras. These components had to be installed in fixed, precise positions and operate correctly within limited packaging space. Even small mechanical design issues could affect assembly, production readiness, supplier discussions, or the performance of systems that depend on accurate sensor positioning.
The client needed additional mechanical design capacity because its internal design team faced high workload and time pressure across several ongoing workstreams. Engineering tasks had to move fast enough to protect time for validation and leave room for unexpected changes before the start of production.
At the same time, every design decision had to reflect manufacturing and assembly constraints. Components had to fit the available geometry, follow the required tolerance concept, and support production processes such as injection molding, metal stamping, and metal casting. Without this alignment, the client risked late documentation changes, extended supplier discussions, or delays in production preparation.
To keep engineering work moving, the client needed specialists who could join quickly, work in the client’s tools and project environment, and support mechanical design tasks with limited onboarding.
Mechanical design support from concept to production readiness
Sii Poland provided mechanical design experts who worked in the client’s toolchain, including NX CAD, CATIA V5, and Siemens Teamcenter. The cooperation ran in a Time and Materials model, allowing the client to assign support to several active safety workstreams depending on current engineering priorities, design workload, and required changes.
The team supported mechanical design activities for active safety and autonomous steering components, from concept definition and engineering data preparation to documentation updates, quotation support, and production readiness activities.
The scope of work included:
- Analyzing customer requirements and supporting concept definition for selected components
- Delivering 3D models, 2D drawings, tolerance stack-up analyses, assembly verification, and feasibility analyses for selected manufacturing processes
- Leading mechanical Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) for selected components and defining special characteristics in line with internal standards
- Defining components, tolerance chains, and Bill of Materials (BOM) structures
- Creating, updating, and supporting approval of technical documentation in Siemens Teamcenter
- Implementing engineering documentation changes after review
- Supporting quotation processes, including data preparation, manufacturability input, and cost estimation support
- Participating in Production Part Approval Process activities and supporting quality engineers in supplier discussions to protect design and regulatory requirements
- Conducting Design for Manufacturing activities for injection molding, metal stamping, and metal casting processes
- Coordinating with electronics, software, quality, and new launch teams to align mechanical design with technical requirements, production feasibility, and optimized manufacturing
Engineering continuity and stronger production readiness
With Sii Poland’s support, the client gained additional mechanical design capacity when internal teams faced high workload across several active safety workstreams. Specialists joined the client’s environment with limited onboarding and started regular task execution from the 3rd day of cooperation, helping the client keep engineering work moving without adding pressure to the internal design organization.
The cooperation helped the client protect project continuity in areas where mechanical design directly affected assembly, sensor positioning, production feasibility, and supplier coordination. Sii’s experts prepared and updated technical documentation, implemented documentation changes after review, and worked with quality and new launch teams to align component design with manufacturing requirements and production readiness.
