Standardizing requirements engineering in a manufacturing environment through IREB Certification

Consistent requirements across multidisciplinary teams

In organizations developing complex technical products, requirements sit at the intersection of business, engineering, IT, and manufacturing. Each of these areas has its own terminology, priorities, and ways of describing needs. As a result, requirements can be interpreted differently by different teams, leading to misunderstandings, additional project iterations, and delays. In international organizations such as Viessmann, these challenges are often amplified by cultural differences and local ways of working.

Operating across multiple countries and engineering disciplines, Viessmann needed a common framework that would improve collaboration and support consistent quality in development processes. This is why many global organizations adopt internationally recognized requirements engineering standards that help teams work more effectively together.

Why IREB?

Widely used across engineering organizations, IREB standards provide a common language, clear rules for eliciting and documenting requirements, and proven validation techniques. For Viessmann, adopting IREB was a natural step toward improving the consistency, quality, and predictability of requirements-related processes.

To support the implementation of the standard across the organization, Viessmann partnered with Sii Poland – a technology and training partner with hands-on experience in requirements engineering, certified training programs, and enterprise-scale competence development. Sii’s ability to combine accredited expertise with practical project experience made it a strong fit for preparing multidisciplinary teams to apply IREB standards consistently in their daily work.

IREB CPRE training and certification for Viessmann engineers

Sii Poland designed and delivered a comprehensive training program preparing Viessmann engineers for the IREB CPRE Foundation Level certification. The program was preceded by consultation sessions with the client to tailor the content to participants from IT, R&D, and Product Management teams.

The scope of the engagement included:

  • Assessing training needs and defining learning objectives
  • Delivering a three-day course led by an accredited IREB trainer
  • Running workshops on requirements elicitation, documentation, and validation techniques
  • Working with commonly used modeling notations, including UML, in the context of real project challenges
  • Preparing participants for the CPRE Foundation Level exam and organizing the certification process

The program concluded with the IREB CPRE examination, confirming participants’ ability to apply recognized requirements engineering techniques in their day-to-day work, from gathering business needs to documenting and validating requirements.

Better collaboration and more predictable projects

Introducing common requirements engineering standards helped align the way teams involved in product development work together, from IT and R&D to engineering functions supporting manufacturing. Certified engineers began using the same terminology, concepts, and techniques for describing requirements, significantly reducing the risk of misunderstandings at the early stages of projects.

Higher-quality requirements improved the predictability of downstream activities, resulting in fewer corrections caused by unclear assumptions and more efficient agreement on project scope across teams. In an environment where change is inevitable, standardization also made it easier to assess the impact of new requirements on products, timelines, and delivery scope.

Through IREB certification, Viessmann gained not only trained specialists but also a shared set of best practices that can be scaled across additional teams and projects without relying on individual working styles or local habits.

Key results

  • Common language and standardized approach to requirements management across IT, R&D, and manufacturing teams
  • Consistent, internationally recognized requirements documentation practices
  • Improved analysis quality through the use of IREB-recommended techniques
  • Increased team competencies validated by CPRE Foundation Level certification
