Python Developer’s job – what do they do, and what does their work look like?

21.10.2026

Python has remained one of the most important programming languages for years, widely used in backend development, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, automation, testing, and DevOps. What does this mean for people who want to develop their careers in this direction? Who is a Python Developer, what do they do on a daily basis, which technologies should they know, and how is AI changing their work?

In this article, we take a practical look at the work of a Python Developer: their responsibilities, projects, required skills, career path from junior to senior, development opportunities, and the future of the profession. If you are also interested in Python and want to develop your skills while working on interesting technological solutions, check out the current job opportunities for Python Developers at Sii and choose a career path that matches your experience and professional goals.

Python Developer – what does the job involve?

Who is a Python Developer and what do they do on a daily basis?

First of all, it is worth noting that the Python programming language has an extremely wide range of applications. You will find it in web application for backend development, Data Science, AI and Machine Learning, automation, testing, and DevOps – and that is still far from an exhaustive list of possibilities. When talking to friends from the industry who work in different areas, I have often had the impression that what connects us is primarily the fundamentals of Python and a certain set of standard tools. However, what we build with them and what our day-to-day work looks like can be completely different. A Python Developer working in Data Science may spend an entire day optimizing the processing of a particularly large dataset, while an engineer developing testing tools may be implementing algorithms that analyze audio quality. Different problems, different projects, but the same programming language.

What are the main responsibilities of a Python Developer?

The scope of responsibilities depends on the specialization and the project, but there is a common development cycle that can be identified. The main responsibilities of a Python Developer include designing, implementing, documenting, testing, debugging, deploying, and maintaining software. The entire process is based on teamwork. Individual tasks may be divided among team members or carried out together, depending on the way the project is organized, its scale, and the methodology used.

What does a typical day for a Python Developer look like?

No two days are exactly the same. An “ideal” day in which we go through the entire software development cycle is unlikely to happen very often. Depending on the scale of the projects and tasks, we may spend several days discussing the design of individual system components with the team before moving on to initial implementations, testing prototypes, integrating new features, or creating documentation. And there will certainly be days when we spend much more time hunting down a particularly nasty bug and analyzing our code line by line.

What tasks does a Python Developer perform in an IT project?

In addition to typical development tasks, analyzing business and technical requirements is an important part of the job. A Python Developer works with business units and architects to refine functionalities, identify project risks, and determine dependencies. Developers also participate in solution design – supporting the selection of appropriate tools and libraries, as well as designing APIs and data structures. Implementation, testing, and solution integration are, of course, also important, followed by ensuring quality and the possibility of further development. A developer should also be able to assess the impact of changes on the existing system and work with other roles during deployment and subsequent maintenance.

Who does a Python Developer work with?

During the early stages of a project, close cooperation with System Analysts, Architects, and Project Managers is often required. This is particularly important when the project is still taking shape, requirements are being identified, the first architecture and solution drafts are being prepared, technologies are being selected, and proposals are being developed. In such situations, the contribution of more experienced developers is invaluable. In ongoing projects, day-to-day collaboration is more likely to involve the Product Owner, Scrum Master, other developers, DevOps engineers, and the QA team.

Which industries employ Python Developers?

Like a real snake, Python has managed to find its way into virtually every industry where software is developed. Even when it is not the dominant language in a particular project and the main technology is, for example, C++, Python often serves as a “second language” used to create scripts, automation, or supporting tools. It has a particularly strong position in areas such as: web application backend development, Data Science and Data Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, automation, test automation, DevOps, and e-commerce.

Python Developer in IT projects – backend, software, and automation

What types of projects does a Python Developer work on?

Projects developed in Python can vary dramatically in scale. They may range from simple automation scripts and standalone tools supporting development teams to large-scale production systems. In web applications, Python can be used to build microservices, APIs, or integrations that enable communication between systems. In testing, it can be used both for simple tests based on ready-made tools and for building specialized testing frameworks from scratch to address unique client requirements. In DevOps, its applications can range from simple command-line tools to advanced automation of software build, testing, and release processes.

What does the process of developing a Python application look like – from idea to deployment?

The Python application development process typically includes requirements analysis, architecture design, implementation, testing, and code review, followed by automated build and deployment using CI/CD. Compared with languages such as Java, C#, or C++, Python often makes it possible to build and prototype solutions faster thanks to its relatively simple syntax, interpreted nature, and extensive ecosystem of libraries.

What are the most common uses of Python in commercial projects?

In commercial projects, Python is often used for backend development, process automation, system integration, and automated testing. It also has a very strong position in Data Science and AI/ML, where it is one of the primary languages used to work with data and models. Python is also used to build developer tools and scripts supporting DevOps and CI/CD. Compared with C++ or Java, for example, it more often serves as a language for automation, integration, and rapid feature development, although it is also successfully used to build large-scale production systems.

Where does Python work best – backend, Data, AI, automation, or DevOps?

Each of these areas is important within the Python ecosystem. In backend development, Python competes with technologies such as Java, C#, and Node.js, while Bash remains the first choice for many DevOps applications. Python has an especially strong position in Data, AI/ML, and automation. It works particularly well wherever development speed, a rich ecosystem of libraries, and easy integration between different systems and technologies matter.

Is Python still one of the most popular programming languages?

Python has consistently ranked among the world’s most popular programming languages for years. Even if it is not the main language used in a particular project, there is a good chance it will still play another role, for example in automation, testing, or tool development.

It is therefore worth knowing, especially since Python has a relatively low entry barrier when it comes to syntax while offering a very broad range of development opportunities.

What does collaboration between a Python Developer, testers, analysts, and DevOps engineers look like?

Collaboration is continuous and close. Most projects today are developed in shorter or longer cycles, requiring regular communication among all members of the team. The key is to organize work in a way that allows people in different roles to clearly communicate their needs and capabilities and then jointly establish dependencies, expectations, and a plan of action.

Python Developer technology stack – frameworks, SQL, and tools

Which Python frameworks are worth knowing?

A lot depends on the specialization. In web development, Django and Flask are among the popular choices, while PyTorch is one of the key frameworks used in Machine Learning. It is also worth paying attention to tools that are common across different Python applications. One of them is pytest, which can be used to test both your own code and external software or devices. Tools for maintaining code quality, such as Ruff and mypy, are also useful, as are solutions for dependency management and package creation, such as Poetry and setuptools. Knowing the main frameworks relevant to your particular domain is important, but it is equally valuable to become familiar with this common set of tools used by Python Developers.

Which technologies most commonly accompany Python?

The core technological skills required of a Python Developer are not significantly different from those needed by developers working with other programming languages. The essentials I cannot imagine working without include: Git, JSON, HTTP and REST APIs, SQL, Docker, Linux, and CLI.

How important is knowledge of databases and SQL for a Python Developer?

There are areas where Python is the main programming language but developers do not work with databases on a daily basis. However, there are also projects where database communication is absolutely fundamental. In backend development and Data Engineering, knowledge of SQL and databases is practically essential. In testing, it may be less important – until there is a need to store or analyze unusual test results. In short, a lack of database knowledge can represent a significant skills gap for a Python Developer.

Should a Python Developer know Docker and Kubernetes?

A Python Developer should know at least the basics of Docker because this technology appears in many types of projects – from creating consistent development environments and running and deploying applications to test environments and CI/CD processes. Basic Docker knowledge allows developers to independently run a project, its dependencies, and supporting services regardless of their local environment. Kubernetes, on the other hand, is particularly useful in projects involving microservices, cloud solutions, large-scale systems, and more complex production infrastructure. In smaller applications, automation, test automation, or some Data/AI projects, Kubernetes may be an additional advantage rather than a fundamental requirement.

Which tools does a Python Developer use on a daily basis?

Daily, I primarily use VS Code, which integrates well with the Python environment and makes it convenient to manage the entire development process. For code quality, I use Ruff and mypy, while for dependency management and package building, I use Poetry and setuptools. Our testing framework is based on pytest, which I use to write unit tests.Sonar Cloud provides an additional layer of quality control, helping identify issues that are not always visible during code review. I also use GitHub Copilot – although still as a “junior colleague” whose code needs to be carefully reviewed.

Python and AI – how is Artificial Intelligence changing a programmer’s work?

Why has Python become a primary programming language for AI projects?

Python has gained a dominant position in AI primarily thanks to its extensive ecosystem of libraries and tools, including PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, NumPy, and pandas. It makes it possible to move relatively quickly from an experiment or prototype to a production-ready solution, while its readable syntax facilitates collaboration between teams combining programming, analytical, and business expertise. In addition, many new tools and frameworks related to Generative AI are being developed specifically with Python in mind.

Is AI knowledge becoming a standard skill for Python Developers?

Basic knowledge of AI is becoming increasingly useful, but that does not mean every Python Developer needs to be a Machine Learning specialist. In many projects, understanding the fundamentals of AI, the capabilities of language models, and how to use ready-made models and APIs is sufficient. However, the ability to use AI as a tool supporting a programmer’s daily work is becoming an increasingly important skill.

How does AI affect the daily work of a Python programmer?

AI can accelerate many everyday tasks – from generating code snippets and tests to refactoring and analyzing errors or documentation. Tools such as GitHub Copilot reduce the amount of code that needs to be written manually, while simultaneously increasing the importance of being able to verify and understand generated code.

As a result, developers are increasingly moving away from the role of someone who writes every line of code themselves and toward the role of a specialist who designs solutions, effectively guides AI tools, and evaluates the generated results.

Which AI-related skills are worth developing?

If I wanted to be cheeky, I could say that AI-related skills were worth developing yesterday… After returning from a three-week vacation and updating VS Code, I had to spend some time figuring out all the newly added Copilot-related features. But seriously, it is worth learning the fundamentals of how LLMs work, techniques for creating effective prompts, how to use model APIs, ways of building AI-powered applications, and how to verify AI-generated code and responses. For a Python Developer, combining existing programming skills with the practical ability to integrate AI into applications and business processes will be particularly valuable.

Junior Python Developer – how to start your career and what should you learn?

What skills should a beginner Python Developer have?

A beginner Python Developer should first have a good understanding of the fundamentals of the language, object-oriented programming, exception handling, working with modules, and the standard library. Other important skills include Git, basic SQL, automated testing, working with APIs, dependency management, project environment management, basic clean code principles, debugging, and the ability to use documentation. There is no need to know dozens of frameworks. A solid understanding of the fundamentals and the ability to solve problems independently are far more important.

What does the career path from Junior Python Developer to Senior look like?

A Junior Python Developer primarily focuses on learning the language, tools, and good practices while completing tasks with support from more experienced colleagues.

A Mid-level Python Developer should already be able to independently design and implement solutions, solve more complex problems, and understand the broader context of the application and the software development process.

A Senior Python Developer is responsible not only for code but also for architecture, technical decisions, and solution quality. They also often support the development of other team members.

The next step may involve moving toward roles such as Technical Lead, Software Architect, domain expert, or a management career path.

What are the most common mistakes made by people learning Python?

A common mistake is focusing solely on syntax and following one tutorial after another instead of solving problems independently and building real projects. Beginners also often try to learn too many frameworks and libraries before gaining a solid understanding of Python itself and its standard library. Another problem is overlooking testing, Git, debugging, typing, or the fundamentals of working with larger projects. It is also worth avoiding blindly copying AI-generated code. AI can accelerate learning, but it cannot replace understanding what the code actually does. From the perspective of someone who conducts technical interviews, I am always particularly impressed by candidates who can show a repository containing their own complete projects. This gives us an opportunity to discuss the solutions they have implemented in detail during the interview. What matters especially is that completeness: the ability to design, implement, test, and document a solution.

What accelerates a Python Developer’s career development the most?

Working on real projects provides the greatest development opportunities, especially projects that require not only writing code but also testing, debugging, using Git and CI/CD, and deploying the solution. Practical work in IT is what allows you to see how knowledge gained during learning translates into real problems, processes, and teamwork. Learning from more experienced developers through code reviews, pair programming, or analyzing existing code is also highly valuable. I often hear from people who have mastered the language syntax and are good at solving “Python programming puzzles” that the next valuable step for them would be working with someone experienced who can show them good practices used in commercial projects. At higher career levels, development is particularly accelerated by the ability to make technical decisions independently and understand the business purpose of the solution being built.

From Junior to Senior Python Developer – developing your skills

Which technical skills are most valued today?

The most valued combination is a solid foundation in Python together with knowledge of testing, Git, SQL, APIs, CI/CD, Docker, and dependency management. Cloud technologies, distributed systems, and AI tools are also becoming increasingly important. At Mid and Senior levels, the ability to design scalable and maintainable solutions becomes particularly important – rather than simply being able to write code efficiently.

Which soft skills help a Python Developer succeed?

Communication, collaboration, and the ability to clearly explain technical information to people with different levels of technical knowledge are very important. Analytical thinking, asking the right questions, and independently looking for solutions are also essential. At higher levels of experience, taking responsibility for your decisions and being able to give and receive constructive feedback are particularly valuable.

Should a Python Developer know AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud?

Basic cloud knowledge is becoming increasingly valuable, particularly in backend, Data, and AI projects. However, this does not mean that every Python Developer needs to be an expert in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. It is worth understanding the basic services and the lifecycle of a cloud application. At Senior level, it is useful to know at least one cloud platform well enough to understand how a Python application is deployed and maintained in a production environment. There are still domains, however, where advanced cloud knowledge will not be necessary.

How important is knowledge of application architecture?

It is very important, particularly as your level of experience increases. A Senior Python Developer should understand not only how to write code, but also where that code should be placed and why. In practice, this means understanding basic architectural patterns, module design principles, communication between services, scaling, and dependency management. Not every developer needs to be a System Architect, but they should be able to assess the consequences of their technical decisions and understand the assumptions behind the architecture being designed.

What distinguishes a good Python Developer from a very good one?

A good Python Developer can implement requirements efficiently and correctly. A very good developer can also challenge a proposed solution when they see a better alternative. They think more broadly – about architecture, maintenance, security, performance, costs, and the impact of their work on the entire team. They can also simplify solutions instead of making them unnecessarily complex and consciously use the tools available to them, including AI.

Python Developer – salaries, job market, and the most in-demand specializations

What determines a Python Developer’s salary?

A Python programmer’s salary depends primarily on their level of experience, specialization, scope of responsibility, additional skills, and the specifics of the project.

Which Python specializations are currently most in demand?

There is strong demand in backend development, Data Engineering, AI/ML, automation, and cloud/DevOps. AI-related specializations are developing particularly rapidly, with Python serving as one of the core languages across the ecosystem. Developers who combine Python with other skills, such as cloud technologies, embedded systems, or infrastructure, are also highly valued.

How has the job market for Python Developers changed?

The market has become more competitive, particularly at junior level. Team structures are also changing. Tasks that previously often went to beginner programmers can now be partially handled with the help of AI agents and tools. As a result, employers increasingly expect broader skills than knowledge of Python syntax alone. At the same time, the development of Artificial Intelligence is increasing the importance of specialists who use Python in AI, Data, and automation.

Which skills make a candidate more attractive to employers?

The greatest value comes from combining very good Python knowledge with additional technical skills that allow it to be applied within a specific business area. In practice, the skill set of someone working as a Python Software Engineer often extends well beyond knowledge of the language itself and depends on the nature of the project and domain. Soft skills are equally important: communication, independence, problem-solving, and collaboration.

Is Python still one of the most future-proof technologies?

Yes. Python remains a highly promising technology, primarily because of its position in AI, Data Science, backend development, and automation. Its enormous ecosystem and use across numerous industries mean that Python skills can be applied to a wide variety of projects. However, what is future-proof is not simply knowledge of Python syntax itself, but the ability to combine Python with AI, cloud technologies, data, and modern software development practices.

The future of Python and the Python Developer profession

What might a Python Developer’s work look like in five years?

The work of a Python Developer will probably become even more focused on designing solutions, integrating systems, and making technical decisions, with less emphasis on manually writing repetitive code. AI will become a permanent part of the programmer’s toolkit, supporting implementation, testing, debugging, and documentation. At the same time, skills that go beyond the programming language itself will become increasingly important, including architecture, cloud technologies, security, data, and knowledge of the business domain.

Will AI replace Python programmers?

AI is unlikely to replace programmers, but it will significantly change the way they work. Simpler programming tasks will become increasingly automated. However, there will still be a need for people who understand requirements, design solutions, evaluate the quality of generated code, and take responsibility for the final outcome. A more likely scenario is therefore one in which programmers who know how to use AI effectively gain an advantage.

Which trends will have the greatest impact on Python’s development?

AI/ML, the development of LLM-powered tools, and the continued evolution of the entire Python ecosystem will have the greatest impact. Improvements in interpreter performance, advances in concurrency and multithreading, and increasingly sophisticated tools for project, dependency, and code quality management will also be important. Python will likely continue expanding its presence in areas where development speed and the ability to easily integrate different technologies matter.

Is Python worth learning?

If I had to convince one person to learn Python, I would say that the language offers a very good effort-to-opportunity ratio. It is relatively easy to get started, while at the same time it can be used to build highly advanced solutions. Python also allows you to quickly see the results of your work, which is a huge advantage when learning and one of the reasons for its popularity among professional developers. And finally – you can always keep an interactive Python session open in the background and use it as a great calculator 🙂
