Cybersecurity Fundamentals

Why take this course

This training bridges the gap between theory and practice. Based on the NIST framework and industry standards, we guide you through the complete security lifecycle: from understanding the attacker’s mindset, through building a “digital fortress,” to managing crises when prevention fails.

We do not teach dry definitions. We adopt an Active Defense perspective. You will understand why hackers no longer rely on brute-forcing firewalls but instead prefer to steal user identities. You will learn to view your organization through the eyes of a cybercriminal and effectively close doors you may not even know exist.

Modern cybersecurity is no longer the exclusive domain of IT specialists hidden away in server rooms. In an era of digital transformation, supply chain attacks, and AI-generated malware, information security has become a cornerstone of business survival. Organizations often fall into the trap of the “illusion of security” — investing in expensive tools while forgetting that people remain the primary attack vector.

What you’ll learn

  1. Understand the anatomy of a cyberattack
  2. Differentiate between automated mass attacks and targeted APT campaigns, map them to attack stages (Cyber Kill Chain / MITRE ATT&CK), and select appropriate defensive measures.
  3. Build a Human Firewall
  4. Recognize advanced manipulation techniques (social engineering) and minimize the risk of human error within teams and organizations.
  5. Secure network and system infrastructure
  6. Design multi-layered protection (Defense in Depth) using network segmentation, firewalls, IDS/IPS solutions, and secure configurations for endpoints and mobile devices.
  7. Apply cryptography in practice
  8. Protect data at rest and in transit using VPNs, TLS, disk encryption, and key management best practices.
  9. Implement effective Identity and Access Management (IAM)
  10. Translate theory into practice through MFA, SSO, federation, the Principle of Least Privilege (PoLP), PAM fundamentals, and identification of “toxic” permission combinations.
  11. Respond to security incidents
  12. Operate according to the NIST Incident Response lifecycle: preparation, detection, containment, eradication, and recovery; understand digital forensics fundamentals.
  13. Understand cloud security fundamentals and the role of a SOC
  14. Understand shared responsibility models in IaaS/PaaS/SaaS environments, common cloud misconfigurations, and the basic SOC workflow (logs → SIEM → alert → playbook).
  15. Use AI responsibly in cybersecurity
  16. Leverage AI tools for security operations (e.g., log analysis and rule creation) while recognizing risks such as prompt injection, shadow AI, and data leakage through AI chat applications.

 

Certification & Exam

CPE / Certification:

  • Completion of the full training program qualifies participants for up to 26 CPE credits (depending on the requirements of their certification body or organization).
  • Opportunity to take the final examination (1 hour / 60 multiple-choice questions).
  • Upon passing the exam, participants receive the “Sii Cybersecurity Fundamentals” certificate.

Threat Landscape

• Who Attacks Us?

Threat actor profiling: from Script Kiddies, through organized cybercriminal groups, to nation-state actors (APTs).

Cyber warfare, industrial espionage, hacktivism, and financial gain.

Hacking Humans – Social Engineering

• The Psychology of Attacks

Principles of influence and persuasion (urgency, authority, fear).

• Attack Vectors

Phishing, spear phishing, vishing (voice-based attacks), and pretexting.

• Physical Security

Tailgating, dumpster diving, and protecting physical devices.

In Practice

  • Analysis of real phishing emails – the “Spot the 5 Differences” workshop.

Day 2 – Think Like a Hacker: Anatomy of an Attack and Malware

  • Malware classification: viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, and adware.
  • Ransomware: evolution from simple encryption to double/triple extortion (data theft + encryption + DDoS).
  • Fileless malware attacks.

Attacks on Applications and the Web (Web Security)

  • How hackers “talk” to databases – the concept of SQL Injection.
  • XSS and session hijacking – how an innocent-looking form field can become a gateway to account compromise.
  • Patch Management:
    • The importance of updates.
    • How missing patches lead to zero-day exploits and attack chains.

AI and Modern Cyber Threats

• How AI Is Changing the Attack Landscape

  • Generating large-scale, personalized phishing campaigns.
  • Voice/video deepfakes targeting executives and finance teams.

• Risks Associated with LLMs

  • Prompt injection and data leakage.
  • Shadow AI – employees using unauthorized AI tools.
  • Hallucinations as a source of poor security decisions.

• AI for Defense

  • Supporting log and report analysis.
  • Assisting in the creation of detection rules, scripts, and documentation.

Endpoint and Mobile Security

  • Threats: malicious applications, rooting/jailbreaking, device loss.

• Encryption in Practice

What the browser “padlock” really means (TLS/SSL).

• Protecting Data in Transit

VPNs, secure remote access, and common user mistakes.

• Cryptography for Non-Technical Audiences

Symmetric vs. asymmetric encryption (public/private key cryptography).

• PKI and Digital Certificates

How trust is established on the Internet.

Wireless Security

• Wi-Fi Evolution

  • Why WEP and WPA are obsolete.
  • WPA2 and WPA3 as the minimum acceptable standard.
