Secure Data Layer for Atlassian Family

Sii implements Secure Data Layer, a solution for organizations in regulated sectors that want to launch modern cloud-based ITSM while maintaining full control over where their data is stored.

LAUNCH JIRA AND JSM CLOUD WITHOUT MOVING CONFIDENTIAL DATA TO THE CLOUD

Secure Data Layer separates sensitive data from the process layer of Jira, Jira Service Management Cloud and Confluence. Only non-confidential data remains in Atlassian Cloud, while restricted information is stored locally on the client’s infrastructure or in their private resources. Atlassian Family products then work as a secure interface for handling tickets, not as a storage location for regulated data.

Secure access to confidential data in Jira, JSM Cloud and Confluence

Sii developed a dedicated Forge app that acts as an intermediary layer between Atlassian Family products and the client’s local resources. Confidential data is retrieved only at the user’s request and displayed in a dedicated panel, without being stored or cached in Atlassian Cloud. This makes it possible to use Jira and JSM Cloud without violating data residency requirements.

Access control aligned with client policies

Secure Data Layer can require additional authentication via SSO, Azure AD, or MFA before sensitive data is displayed. Permissions are verified on the client side, not by Atlassian Family products. If a user is not authorized to access specific information in the client’s systems, the data will not be displayed. This gives organizations greater control over access in environments with strict security requirements.

Less complex architecture, more cloud deployment opportunities

Sii’s solution reduces the need to build multiple instances and complex structures resulting from different data residency requirements. Instead of separating environments by country and jurisdiction, the client can maintain a single Jira, JSM Cloud and Confluence environment while keeping the most sensitive data locally. This approach works well when regulatory requirements make it difficult or impossible to move to the cloud in the standard model.

Flexible deployment aligned with the client’s infrastructure

The solution backend can run on different technologies and client resources, such as PostgreSQL, Azure Blob Storage, file servers, or other local repositories. Sii can prepare the integration itself or also cover the implementation of the required backend layer. As a result, Secure Data Layer is not a rigid marketplace add-on, but a solution tailored to the organization’s requirements and country of operation.

What is Secure Data Layer?

Secure Data Layer is a custom solution based on the Forge app that enables organizations to use Jira, Jira Service Management Cloud and Confluence without storing confidential data in Atlassian Cloud. Sensitive data remains on the client’s infrastructure and is only displayed in JSM after being securely retrieved.

How does Secure Data Layer work in practice?

Atlassian Family products handle the process and user interface, while the Forge app connects to the client’s backend, such as a database, file repository, or authentication system. The user clicks “Load data”, and the data is retrieved on demand, without being stored or cached in Atlassian Cloud.

What data can remain outside Atlassian Cloud?

The solution was designed primarily for the most confidential data, such as technical details, medical data, and attachments. Only non-confidential information, such as ticket metadata, can remain in Atlassian Cloud.

Does the solution support attachments?

Yes. Attachments can be retrieved from the client’s local resources and displayed in Atlassian Family products without being stored in Atlassian Cloud. This is important in cases where files contain data subject to additional regulations.

Can access to data be additionally secured?

Yes. Secure Data Layer can use additional authentication, such as SSO, Azure AD, or MFA. This makes it possible to verify the user’s identity before confidential data is displayed, even if the organization wants to limit its trust in the Atlassian environment itself.

Who controls data permissions?

Permissions are verified on the client side, based on the client’s systems and access policies. Atlassian Family products does not independently decide who can view sensitive data. If the user does not have the required permissions in the client’s environment, the data will not be displayed.

Can Sii also implement the backend?

Yes. Sii can deliver not only the Forge layer and integration with JSM Cloud, Jira and Confluence but also help implement or extend the backend needed to store data and support authorization. This is important for organizations that do not want to build the entire solution on their own.
