Driving toward Vision Zero: Automotive software innovations

09.04.2026

The automotive industry is undergoing a major transformation, with software playing a central role in advancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability. A key global objective driving this evolution is Vision Zero – the ambition to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

Vision Zero is a multinational road traffic safety project that aims to achieve a roadway system with no fatalities or serious injuries. It started in Sweden and was approved by the parliament in October 1997.

A core principle of the vision is that “Life and health can never be exchanged for other benefits within society.” Rather than relying on the conventional comparison between costs and benefits — where a monetary value is placed on life and health and used to decide how much to invest in reducing risk — Vision Zero states that only zero accidents is the acceptable outcome.

While autonomous driving and active safety systems often take the spotlight, there are equally critical, subtler innovations making a direct impact on road safety. Two projects exemplify how advanced software solutions are helping achieve this goal: Vehicle Sound Generators (VSG) and Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS).

Vehicle Sound Generator (VSG) – Acoustic safety for urban mobility

Electric and hybrid vehicles are nearly silent at low speeds, creating risks for pedestrians, cyclists, and visually impaired individuals. Vehicle Sound Generators (VSGs) address this challenge by producing artificial sounds that raise awareness and help prevent accidents.

A global automotive technology leader tasked Sii Poland with modernizing its legacy VSG1 solution to a new hardware platform (VSG2). Beyond maintaining production continuity, the project focused on enhancing performance, configurability, and acoustic quality — directly supporting Vision Zero goals.

Key achievements included:

  • Advanced software architecture – designing sound-processing features such as EQ, limiters, smoothers, and pitch control
  • Seamless integration – connecting the VSG to the master application via CAN/RTE, enabling real-time control through a dedicated PC interface
  • Sound quality optimization – ensuring clean, delay-free playback through external speakers, adjustable for speed, driving direction, EQ, and audio sample selection
  • Diagnostics and security – implementing KWP/UDS diagnostics, AUTOSAR applications, and OEM-compliant security access
  • CI and QA excellence – full ASPICE-compliant quality assurance with unit and integration testing, Jenkins-based CI, and Coverity analysis

The outcome: a next-generation VSG2 solution that safeguards pedestrians, maximizes configurability, and reduces hardware costs. By turning sound into a proactive safety signal, the system demonstrates how even subtle technologies play a critical role in achieving zero accidents.

Driver Monitoring System (DMS) – Preventing accidents through Driver awareness

While vehicle sensors monitor the environment, the driver remains the most unpredictable factor on the road. Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) help prevent accidents by continuously assessing driver alertness, detecting distractions, and enabling timely interventions via advanced ADAS systems.

For a leading European OEM, the Sii Poland team upgraded a legacy DMS from Classic AUTOSAR to Adaptive AUTOSAR, building a system capable of monitoring:

  • Fatigue and attention – yawning, prolonged eye closure, and head position
  • Distracted behaviors – phone use, eating, smoking, or talking
  • Driver status metrics – blinking patterns, eye closure, and head orientation

The Sii Poland contributions included:

  • Dedicated ASPICE-compliant team – delivering full SWE.5–SWE.6 testing and acting as the single point of contact for the OEM
  • Platform integration and diagnostics – Adaptive AUTOSAR implementation, software builds, debugging, and self-tests including voltage monitoring, watchdog pulses, and image frame validation
  • Comprehensive QA cycle – end-to-end testing ensuring reliability, safety, and compliance for production release

The result: a production-ready DMS that proactively prevents accidents by alerting or assisting distracted or drowsy drivers. This solution directly supports Vision Zero, protecting both vehicle occupants and vulnerable road users.

Driving software innovation toward Zero

Together, the VSG and DMS projects illustrate a broader trend in automotive software: using intelligent systems to prevent accidents before they occur. Whether through acoustic signals that alert pedestrians or cameras that monitor driver attention, these solutions demonstrate that safety is increasingly about anticipation and prevention.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, software-driven safety innovations like VSG and DMS are critical tools for achieving Vision Zero — reducing fatalities, mitigating risks, and building trust in the vehicles of the future.
