Medical device design: Challenges faced by engineering teams

25.05.2026

Today’s technologies are often developed for environments where there is very little room for error. In fields such as healthcare and life sciences, designing solutions means working in conditions where even the smallest detail can have a direct impact on patient health and safety. Here, engineering goes far beyond technology alone – it becomes a combination of precision, responsibility, and a deep understanding of real‑world use.

In the latest episode of Sii Talks, Wojciech Drescher, Head of Healthcare at Sii Poland, speaks with Ewelina Kozioł, Offering Lead at Product Design Studio, about what it means to design solutions where accuracy and responsibility are absolutely critical.

Design between form and responsibility

Product design is often associated primarily with aesthetics and form. In reality, however, it is a much broader discipline. As Ewelina Kozioł emphasizes, behind every final product shape lie functionality, ergonomics, safety, and hundreds of hours of analysis and simulation. Especially in industries such as automotive and healthcare, design has a tangible impact on people – from everyday comfort to minimizing risk in critical situations.

Projects where health and safety are at stake

During the conversation, several examples of projects delivered by Sii are discussed. These include simulations of robotic arms used in laparoscopic surgery, where the key challenge is balancing surgical precision with the safety of medical staff; the design of a protective enclosure for a human tissue printer; rehabilitation and well‑being solutions, such as motion‑supporting suits for patients; and advanced prosthetics that significantly improve mobility and quality of life. Each of these projects highlights how closely engineering and technology are connected to real human needs.

AI as support for engineers

Another important topic in the discussion is the use of Artificial Intelligence as practical support for engineering work. In healthcare, the volume of data is enormous, which is why AI algorithms are increasingly assisting engineers in analysis, simulation, and optimization. As Ewelina Kozioł points out, AI does not replace engineers – it supports them in decision‑making, helps explore alternative solutions, and enables more efficient work with complex datasets.
