How to find a job in the IT industry? Discover the stories of Sii training participants

Training courses in the Become an IT Specialist series have been organized by Sii for six years now. Over 2 000 people, who decided to change their career path and enter the technology sector, have already participated in them. Read the stories of Zuzanna, Magdalena, and Michał, who after completing our courses joined Sii Poland.

What were your professions before you decided to change career paths, and what motivated you to make such a move?

Zuzanna Stanisławska, Become a Business Analyst training graduate, Consultant at Sii Poland: I worked as a Marketing Manager in a large global company, and before that, I’d worked in advertising agencies. I decided to make this change because I wanted to join the IT industry, which I find very prospective. It is an area that has many development opportunities, it changes quickly and offers a lot of challenges for specialists.

Magdalena Podemska, Become a Tester training graduate, Junior Test & Analysis Engineer at Sii Poland: Previously, I was a violinist – a concertmaster of a symphonic orchestra, which was connected with busy evenings and a great number of trips. I decided to try something new, and on top of that I became a mother, so I needed to clear my evening schedule. I wanted to continue doing something creative, interesting, engaging, and ambitious. Something in which I could continue to be a specialist and develop.

Michał Węsierski, Become a Java Developer training graduate, Junior Software Engineer at Sii Poland: I worked in a field closely related to IT – I specialized in PLC programming, specifically in devices for car paint shops. Unfortunately, my job involved frequent business trips, so I decided to change it. I wanted to work in an industry that would be close to what I do, but at the same time would give me both more flexibility and more time for my private life. That’s why I chose IT.

Why did you decide to participate in Sii training?

Z.S.: I was looking for an area that would allow me to use the knowledge I’d already gained during my career. Also, I have analytical skills, which, unfortunately, I haven’t had the opportunity to use to the full extent before. So after checking various development opportunities in the IT area, I got interested in business analysis. I found Sii’s Become a Business Analyst training online, and several factors convinced me to enroll – professional, well-prepared materials, opinions of other training participants, and a webinar devoted to business analysts’ work, which I found on Sii’s website.

M.P.: It all started when my friend, also a violinist who became a tester, recommended to me a book about the testing profession. I was very interested in this career path and wanted to learn more about it. Another colleague told me about the Become a Tester course organized by Sii. The training program looked very promising, so I decided to take part in it.

M.W.: I have a few friends who work at Sii and they recommended the company to me. I also liked the fact that after the course there is a possibility to do an internship here – I can tell from my experience that it teaches a lot about the actual work in the given position and employers look favorably on such experience.

How do you recall your courses?

Z.S.: I was delighted with the training from the very beginning! The course showed the work of an analyst very comprehensively, from various perspectives. We got ready for the certification, learned about the role of business analysis in the context of agile project management methodologies, discussed many technical issues, and practiced in groups. We also had a great trainer, who is not only a theorist but also works as an analyst on a daily basis. During the training, I learned everything that was mentioned in the course description.

M.P.: The training was conducted in a clear manner and the atmosphere was very pleasant. The course leaders sent us a lot of extra materials by e-mail and offered help in case we had any questions. I have to admit that I was happy to use this opportunity. The trainer devoted a lot of his time to me, replying to many e-mails, checking the reported bugs or written test cases, and helping me find answers to some questions for the ISTQB exam.

M.W.: During the training, we got a solid dose of knowledge. I learned the basics of Java, thanks to which I could perform the tasks assigned to me during the internship. The internship itself was excellent and prepared me well for project work. I could not only test my knowledge in practice but also get to know the tools necessary in a developer’s work and agile working methodologies – we worked in weekly sprints, and started each day with a daily, where we described what we’d done the previous day and what we were planning next. This is exactly how I work on the current project.

How did you join Sii and what do you currently do?

Z.S.: While attending the training, I already met many people who work at Sii, and talking with them proved to me that this is a place worth working at. After the course, our trainer recommended me to Sii and after going through the recruitment process, I joined the Salesforce Competence Center team as a Pardot Consultant. In this position I successfully combine my previous experience in marketing with the skills I acquired during the training – I analyze customer needs and recommend solutions that will suit their business best.

M.P.: After finishing the course I got a call from Sii with a job interview offer, and then I was assigned to a large project for the pharmaceutical sector as a manual tester. The work is interesting and engaging. I’ve been working here for almost a year now but I’ve never been bored with my tasks, and my team consists of fantastic, helpful people. What I like the most is constantly racking my brains and searching for bugs. And finding bugs is what a tester likes best.

M.W.: After finishing the internship I started working for one of Sii’s clients – an American bank. What’s interesting, I currently deal with the front-end much often. It doesn’t reflect the training that I completed, but I’m very happy because I’m constantly developing and learning new things. I do what I like to do because I really enjoy programming. I mainly do maintenance tasks – fixing security holes in the application, repairing features that stopped working or don’t work as intended, fixing bugs, and adding new functionalities.

What advice do you have for people who are also thinking about changing their professions?

Z.S.: It’s definitely a good idea to check out different opportunities and development paths in the industry you’re interested in and to talk to people who work in that field to learn more about their jobs. Another useful tip is to think about which skills from the previous role you can use in your new job. It often turns out that your new career track has many similarities to the existing one.

M.P.: In the beginning, it’s a good idea to participate in webinars, and if there is a possibility, ask your friends what their work looks like, stock up on books, and look for relevant groups on social media. If you are a thorough person who likes to dig into details and think things over, then you should definitely start planning a career in testing.

M.W.: It is certainly easier for people with a technical background to enter the IT industry, but I know people with a degree in humanities who also thrive in this sector. It is necessary to have lots of motivation and determination. Things that seem difficult at first, later become manageable and turn into your daily routine. In addition, you need to remember that this is not a short-term process, but if you find passion in it, such a change of industry is feasible.
